What is Reiki Healing and What Happens During a Session?

What is it?

The word “Reiki” is a combination of two Japanese words: “rei,” which means “God’s wisdom,” or “the higher power,” and “ki,” which means “life force energy.”  Reiki healing is a way of guiding energy throughout the body to promote the recipient’s self-healing abilities. Reiki healing is performed by a Reiki healer who has undergone an attunement process that opened up their energy channels to the Universal energy that is all around us allowing the Reiki practitioner to channel energy to a recipient.  Reiki healing reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep, and lessens pain through light (or no) touch.  Reiki healing energy cannot cause harm.  Your body will take the energy it needs and wants and it will leave the rest.

What should you expect in a session with me?

Reiki sessions with me last 60 minutes. You’ll spend the entire session lying down fully clothed or in another comfortable position for you. The closer you can get to lying down, the better!  During the session, if we are in person, I will place my hands lightly on or near your body in a series of hand positions, including positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and the feet, as well as other positions depending on your needs. If we are doing distance healing I will do the same thing using a yoga bolster.  Each hand position is held for roughly 3 to 10 minutes, depending on what you need in each position. I will sometimes use crystals in the healing session to better channel energy and I may also use essential oils.  Most of the session will be done in silence.  You can expect to feel deeply relaxed and content during the session. You’ll likely daydream, and you may even fall into a light sleep.  When the session is over, I will bring you back into yourself and you should wake up feeling calm and grounded.
